The Origin of the Name ‘Bon Iver’
The name is a deliberate misspelling of the French phrase bon hiver, meaning “good winter”. In 2006, while bedridden with mononucleosis, Vernon watched an episode of the TV show Northern Exposure where townspeople greeted the first snowfall by saying “bon hiver”. He adopted the phrase but removed the “h” because it reminded him of his liver disease and the sound of “hives”. He also noted that the spelling looked more like “liver”, which helped distract him from his pain during his illness, as shared on Wikipedia and a Reddit discussion.
