Sam Cat – Why The Show Was Cancelled After One Season

Nickelodeon’s Sam & Cat brought together two of the network’s most popular characters for a high-concept sitcom about a pair of teenage babysitters. The show paired Sam Puckett from iCarly with Cat Valentine from Victorious, creating a crossover series that drew millions of viewers. Despite strong ratings, the series ended abruptly after a single season in 2014, leaving many fans wondering what went wrong.

The show aired from June 2013 to July 2014, producing 35 episodes. It followed Sam and Cat as they started a babysitting business in Los Angeles, encountering a rotating cast of quirky children and neighbors. The premise was simple, but the chemistry between the two leads drove the show’s popularity.

More than a decade after its cancellation, Sam & Cat remains a topic of curiosity. Questions about why it ended, whether a second season exists, and where to stream the episodes continue to surface. This article provides a clear, fact-based overview.

Sam and Cat: Show Overview and Premise

• Short-lived hit: Sam & Cat was cancelled after just one season despite high ratings.
• Lead departure: Jennette McCurdy’s decision to leave acting was the primary reason the show ended.
• Crossover concept: The series is a rare crossover spin-off combining characters from iCarly and Victorious.
• Streaming in 2025: The show is available on Netflix globally, not on Paramount+ as some sources suggest.
• No reboot: Despite fan interest, no official plans for a revival exist as of 2025.

Full Sam and Cat Cast and Characters

The show’s cast was small but memorable. Jennette McCurdy reprised her role as Sam Puckett, the tough, prank-loving tomboy from iCarly. Ariana Grande played Cat Valentine, the sweet, high-pitched, and somewhat naive character from Victorious. Together, they formed an unlikely but entertaining duo.

Main Cast

Cameron Ocasio played Dice, a neighbor and friend who often helped with the babysitting business. Maree Cheatham portrayed Nona, Cat’s grandmother who lived with the girls. Zoran Korach played Goomer, a dim-witted but kind-hearted boxer who lived in the same building. These supporting characters added depth to the show’s world.

Notable Guest Stars and Crossovers

One of the most frequently asked questions about the show involves the character Jade West from Victorious. Elizabeth Gillies reprised her role as Jade in the episode “#TheKillerTunaJump: #Freddie #Jade #Robbie.” This episode also featured Nathan Kress as Freddie Benson from iCarly and Matt Bennett as Robbie Shapiro from Victorious, making it a true crossover event.

Why Was Sam and Cat Cancelled? (The Truth)

The cancellation of Sam & Cat was not due to low ratings. In fact, the show was a ratings success for Nickelodeon. The real reasons were behind the scenes and involved the two lead actresses.

Jennette McCurdy decided to leave acting entirely. In her 2024 memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died, she detailed her unhappiness with the industry and the lack of control she felt over her career. This decision effectively ended the show, as Nickelodeon could not continue without her. A salary dispute between McCurdy and the network, as well as an alleged feud between McCurdy and Ariana Grande, also contributed to the tense atmosphere on set. Grande’s rapidly rising music career meant she was also ready to move on.

Nickelodeon officially cancelled the series in April 2014, and the final episode aired on July 17, 2014. There is no season 2, and no official plans for a reboot have been announced.

How Many Episodes of Sam and Cat Are There?

Sam & Cat produced a total of 35 aired episodes, out of 40 that were originally ordered. The series consists of a single season. One episode, “#TheKillerTunaJump: #Freddie #Jade #Robbie,” was a 45-minute special that served as the series finale.

The episode list includes titles such as “#Pilot,” “#FavoriteShow,” “#TheBritBrats,” and “#SecretSafe.” The show followed a standard sitcom format, with most episodes running approximately 22 minutes. The complete series was released on DVD in 2015.

Where to Watch Sam and Cat in 2025

As of 2025, all 35 episodes of Sam & Cat are available to stream on Netflix globally. The show is not currently available on Paramount+ in most regions, despite some online claims to the contrary. There is no new content or “2025 streaming release” because the show has been off the air for over a decade.

For those who prefer physical media, the complete series was released on DVD in 2015. The show is not available on Amazon Prime Video or Hulu in most regions. Viewers outside of Netflix’s coverage area may need to check local streaming libraries.

What We Know for Certain and What Remains Unclear

The Context Behind Sam & Cat

Sam & Cat was a direct result of the popularity of iCarly and Victorious. Both shows were flagship series for Nickelodeon in the late 2000s and early 2010s, and the network saw an opportunity to combine their fan bases. The show aired during a peak era for Nickelodeon multi-camera sitcoms, a period defined by creator Dan Schneider’s distinctive style.

Jennette McCurdy’s departure was a major factor in the show’s end. She had been a key part of iCarly and this spin-off, and her decision to leave acting left the network without a viable path forward. The cancellation was abrupt, leaving episode arcs unresolved, including the cliffhanger involving the babysitting business.

Sources and Key Quotes on the Cancellation

Nickelodeon confirmed that the show would not be returning for a second season due to McCurdy’s decision to depart.
